PREPARE

How to prepare for your spray tan appointment:

Timing is everything. If at all possible, book your spray tan 24- 48 hours before your special occasion. We offer an express tan that sets in 1-4 hours which is awesome for same day wash and wear, but we don’t recommend this for first time clients because you don’t know if you’ll be happy with a 1 hour set time or a full 4 hour set time.

A quick list:

shower, shave, and exfoliate before 10-12 hours  prior to your tan

-schedule all waxing appointments for a day in advance if possible, and definitely prior to your tanning appointment

-do not apply lotions, deodorant, or makeup prior to your tan

-wear dark, loose fitting clothing, flip flops, and a strapless bra

-.Hair appointments, Manicures, and pedicures should be done prior to your tanning session.

Exfoliate

The most crucial step – exfoliate! If you skip this step or do not exfoliate well, you might not get an even looking tan and when it starts to fade it is likely to come off in patches. The best time to do it is also a day before your spray tan so that the skin has a chance to recover. Be very, very thorough in places where there is a buildup of dead skin like elbows, knees and ankles.

You need the pores to close properly after hair removal. If they don’t, excess spray tan solution can lodge in those pores and that will give you a spotty look –that’s stress you don’t need and a look we strive to avoid.

Lotions, Deodorant & Makeup

On the day of your spray tan have a shower using a soap or body wash that does not contain a lot of moisturizers or oils. No Dove, no Dial, no Oil of Olay, no Irish Spring. You get the idea. Do not apply anything to your skin like moisturizer, body butters, deodorant, or make up. These products have a tendency to block spray tanning solution from reaching your skin and you can finish with lighter patches.

Some deodorants can also react with a spray tanning solution and turn your underarms green. It usually rinses off with the bronzer and is fine, but during your set time you will have green armpits. Like half a Hulk. And sometimes deodorants act as a block. If you need  – carry some wet towelettes and wipe your underarms before your session. That can also work for make up if you truly, positively have to wear some before you get to the salon. We usually have makeup remover and towelettes in house- just ask us for help!

Waxing

Waxing can leave a residue on your skin, which can act as a block for your spray tan. But hey, we all have busy lives and sometimes you have to get everything done in one day. No problem. Let us know if you just had a wax and we can give you an exMitt to remove that residue.

Waxing after you’re tanned = stripping off the spray tan wherever you wax.  Shaving will reduce the longevity of your tan, but it will not completely strip your tan. If you have to shave your legs after your tan has set and you’ve rinsed, then you’ll be okay but your tan won’t last as long.

Hair Appointments, Manicures & Pedicures

Hair appointments, manicures, and pedicures all= the possibility you getting wet or exfoliating after you’ve been tanned. And I want you to enjoy that hand and foot massage, not have to skip it for a polish change only.

Clothing

Loose, dark, breathable fabrics and flip flops are your best bet.  A strapless bra is easier to put back on if you must wear a bra after your session. Rain boots on rainy days are a must, as well as a hooded coat and umbrella. Find your ideal tanning “outfit” and keep it in a bag in your car with your gym clothes. Or let me store it for you at Shade.

POST TAN MAINTENANCE

A quick list:

-    stay dry for the set period of time as recommended by Melissa so your tan can fully develop
-    Sleeping in your tan is okay if you follow the rules
-    Don’t panic that you are going to be THAT dark when you look in the mirror at the end of your set time. Relax.
-    Preserve that top layer of skin! Shower with warm water not hot to rinse off the bronzer.
-    Use recommended soap
-    MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE MOISTURIZE.
-    Use recommended lotion.
-    Rinse with fresh water and moisturize after exposure to drying agents like chlorine
-    Use an SPF

Stay Dry

Make sure to stay dry for the set period as recommended by Melissa during her aftercare speech. No washing your hands, no running in the rain, no getting licked by your pet, no crying, no sweating, and use a straw to drink liquids. Be careful when you brush your teeth. Drool is not your friend.

Sleeping in Your Tan

If you are sleeping before you rinse:  We recommend loose, dark, cotton long sleeve shirts and pants and if you tend to sleep with your hands on another part of your body, loose gloves or cotton socks over your hands. It may look silly but we promise you’ll be psyched when you don’t have tan palms in the morning! The cosmetic bronzer in our solutions is akin to any other makeup- it should easily wash out of sheets and undergarments and clothes.  Still, we aren’t responsible for damage and we would hate if something you loved was stained, so wear something and only touch what you are okay with getting tanner on.

Moisturize

Moisturizing will make or break your tan. I will recommend that you find one that’s water based. NO oils. I have used them all and carry the lines I found to be most cost effective, most universally appealing scent wise, and most effective. Ask me about them. And in any case, just be thorough with your application. You need to preserve that top layer of skin or your tan will fade unevenly. Keep your exposure to drying agents like chlorine ( rinse with fresh water after swimming or going in the ocean or hot tub) at a minimum. Then moisturize heavily.

Use SPF

Your spray tan does not provide SPF protection. I have had the best luck using the spray/sport fast dry sunscreens. The spray and go technology works better to us than lotion for keeping tans even.

Rinse

DHA is clear, but you get an instantaneous result with our solutions because they have a cosmetic bronzer in them. After the setting time is complete, the top layer of skin is also dyed and tan, so you are doubly dark. When you rinse you will feel like a human being again.

Shower Rules

Not hot. Be cool. Especially that first shower. No loofahs, no washcloths, no body washes with beads or salt/sugar scrubs. And just like during your prep shower, No Dove, no Dial, no Oil of Olay, no Irish Spring.
